ScreenArt Pro vs Screen Studio: the Screen Studio alternative for Windows

The short answer. Screen Studio is the reference for smooth-cursor, auto-zoom demo videos, and it is macOS-only with no one-time price any more. On Windows, ScreenArt Pro records the same kind of take, with zooms that follow your clicks, a smoothed cursor, a 3D card, intros and transitions on the GPU, and then adds what Screen Studio lacks: a screenshot editor, Smart Redact across stills and video, local subtitles, and an MCP server so an AI agent can record the demo for you. €1.99 a month next to $9, or €24.99 once.

Why people search for a Screen Studio alternative

Screen Studio changed what a product demo looks like. The cursor glides, the camera leans in on every click, the window floats on a gradient with a soft shadow, and a 40-second clip of a settings dialog looks like a launch video. Founders, course creators and marketing teams copied the look so widely that “Screen Studio style” is a phrase.

Two things send people looking for an alternative. The first is that Screen Studio runs only on macOS. There is no Windows version, and there never has been. The second is the price: the one-time licence is gone, and the plan that keeps the app updated is $9 a month billed yearly, or $29 month to month. For a tool most people open a few times a month, that adds up to $216 over two years.

ScreenArt Pro is the Windows answer to both. This article compares them properly: what Screen Studio does, what ScreenArt Pro does, what only each of them does, and the arithmetic.

What Screen Studio does well

  • It defined the look. The easing on the zoom, the cursor motion and the default backgrounds are tasteful out of the box, and most people never change them.
  • It is simple. Record, trim, export. You can make a good demo in ten minutes the first time you open it.
  • Webcam and iPhone. The camera bubble is polished, and recording an iPhone screen over USB is unusual and useful for mobile demos.
  • It is a mature Mac app with a large community and a lot of tutorials.

If you are on a Mac and $108 a year is fine, it is a good tool. The rest of this article is about doing the same job on Windows, for a fraction of the price, with a longer list of things it can do.

Where ScreenArt Pro matches it

The point of ScreenArt Pro’s recorder is that a raw take becomes a watchable clip without a second recording. You press record on a window, an area or a whole display. Frames come from the display at physical size through Windows Graphics Capture, with GPU encoding when your machine has it, across monitors with different scaling. Where you clicked and what you typed are saved alongside the video.

Open the take in the editor and the polish is already on the timeline:

  • Auto-zoom. The camera eases in on each click and burst of typing, and out again when you pause. Each zoom is a clip: drag it to change where or how far it goes, or delete it. The zoom is anchored and smoothed so it never swims.
  • Cursor. The pointer is its own layer: smooth the path, scale it up past 200%, give it a glass look, hide it for a stretch, and the recorded mouse movement is replayed as a damped path rather than the jittery original.
  • Card, backdrop, tilt. A framed card on a background, with a 3D tilt and motion blur, and scene lighting from a point light you can place.
  • Intros and transitions. Sixteen intro styles, twelve transition kinds, grain, halation, bloom and colour looks, all rendered on the GPU so the preview stays smooth and the export runs faster than real time on a typical take.
  • Captions and keystroke badges. Lower-third captions and the shortcuts you pressed, placed where they happened. Edit the text without moving it.
  • Clips. Delete a clip and the gap closes. Reorder, split and trim; zoom the timeline with Ctrl and the wheel.
  • Export. MP4 (H.264), WebM with a transparent background, and GIF, in 16:9, 1:1, 4:5 or 9:16 from the same project. The project stays editable after export.

That is the Screen Studio take, on Windows. The recording page walks through each piece.

Where ScreenArt Pro goes further

Secrets covered automatically, for every frame

Screen Studio has sensitive-data masks. You find the customer’s email in the frame, draw a mask, set when it starts and ends, and do it again for the next one.

ScreenArt Pro’s Smart Redact runs text recognition on the recording on your PC and finds emails, API keys, bearer tokens, JWTs, card numbers, IBANs, phone numbers, IP addresses and connection strings with passwords in them. Each match is covered in the colour sampled from around it, flat or gradient, so it reads as part of the page, and it stays covered for every second it is on screen, in the preview and in the export. A customer’s details that scroll past at minute three are covered for those seconds. Switch any cover to Blur, Pixelate or Secure, switch one off if it caught something harmless, or draw one by hand.

For anyone recording an admin panel, a CRM, a billing page or a terminal, this is the difference between a demo you can publish and a demo you have to re-record.

A screenshot editor in the same app

Screen Studio makes videos. Most people who make product videos also make product screenshots, for the docs, the changelog, the tweet and the README, and they end up with a second tool for that.

ScreenArt Pro is one editor. The screenshot side captures at the physical pixels of the display (so a 12px label is as crisp as the display drew it), keeps arrows, boxes, counters and captions as editable layers, runs the same Smart Redact, and puts the capture on the same backdrop, corners, shadow, lighting and 3D tilt as the video, with Beautify doing all of it in one click. A brand kit carries one look across both, so the screenshot in the docs matches the clip on the landing page.

Subtitles made on your PC

Generate captions from your voice-over with a speech model that runs on your machine, fix the words, then burn them in or export SRT and VTT alongside. Editing the transcript ripple-cuts the video, so removing an “um” from the text removes it from the take. Nothing is uploaded to be transcribed.

An AI agent can record the demo

ScreenArt Pro runs as an MCP server, the open protocol Claude, Codex and most coding assistants use to call tools. For video, that means two things no other recorder offers.

Scripted recordings. An agent sends record_video a script of steps (move, click, type, key, scroll, drag, wait) for a named window. ScreenArt Pro moves the real pointer on the live app, finds each target by the text visible on screen at that moment, zooms to it, sketches a hand-drawn circle or arrow where the pointer lands, adds a lower third at the time each step happens, and returns the finished MP4, GIF or WebM. perform runs the same steps without recording, to set a screen up or put it back.

Record and Replay. You rehearse a task once in the app. It becomes a walkthrough the agent can list, read, fix a renamed label in, and replay as a clean recording at the pace you choose. When the UI changes, the agent reruns it instead of you re-recording it.

The agent can also write and preview intro styles as JSON, pick a brand kit by name, and set an intro on a saved project before export. You approve each session, anything that moves the mouse asks again, and Esc or a touch of the mouse stops a run. The automation page lists all 25 tools.

For a founder who ships a feature a week, this is the part that pays for itself: the demo for the release notes is a sentence to your agent, not an afternoon.

Where Screen Studio is still the right choice

  • You work on a Mac. ScreenArt Pro is Windows-only until the Mac app ships. Join the waitlist and use Screen Studio meanwhile.
  • You need iPhone screen recording over USB in the same take. ScreenArt Pro does not do that.
  • You want a webcam bubble with background removal. ScreenArt Pro records the camera as a plain shaped overlay.
  • You want the exact Screen Studio defaults. ScreenArt Pro’s look is its own; it is adjustable to taste, but it is not a clone.

Price, in full

Screen Studio is $9 a month billed yearly, which is $108 a year, or $29 if you pay month to month. The one-time licence it used to sell is no longer offered, so there is no way to buy it and keep it.

ScreenArt Pro has two plans, and the whole app is in both:

  • €1.99 a month. Every update for as long as you subscribe. Cancel from your account.
  • €24.99 once. Two years of updates, then keep the last version you installed for as long as you like.

Two years of Screen Studio is $216. Two years of ScreenArt Pro is €24.99, and that figure includes the screenshot editor, Smart Redact, local subtitles and the MCP server. Polar is the merchant of record, so there is a VAT-compliant invoice at checkout and a 14-day refund on either plan.

It is cheaper because it is one person’s app with no cloud behind it: no hosting, no per-seat plan, no credits. Everything, including the speech model and the text recognition, runs on your PC.

Who should pick which

  • A SaaS founder on Windows making launch and feature videos: ScreenArt Pro. The same auto-zoom take, a 3D card with an intro, wide for the site and vertical for the feed from one project.
  • A course creator: ScreenArt Pro. Keystroke badges, captions, subtitles made locally, and a transcript you can edit.
  • A developer recording anything with real data on screen: ScreenArt Pro, because Smart Redact covers the secrets for you.
  • A documentation or support team that wants demos on demand: ScreenArt Pro, for the MCP server and walkthrough replay.
  • A Mac user who needs iPhone recording or a background-removed webcam bubble: Screen Studio.

The bottom line

Screen Studio is the Mac tool that made product demos look good, and it costs $108 a year with no option to own it. ScreenArt Pro gives a Windows PC the same kind of take, in the same editor as its screenshots, with secrets covered automatically, subtitles made locally, and an MCP server so your AI agent can record the walkthrough while you do something else. €1.99 a month or €24.99 once.

Record a window, open it in the editor, and watch the zooms land where you clicked. If it is not the one, the refund takes 14 days.

Questions people ask

Is Screen Studio available on Windows?

No. Screen Studio runs on macOS 13.1 or later only. ScreenArt Pro is a Windows 10 and 11 app that records the same kind of demo: a zoom that follows your clicks, a smoothed and enlarged cursor, a framed card on a background, intros, transitions and motion blur rendered on the GPU, exported as MP4, WebM or GIF in wide, square or vertical.

What is the best Screen Studio alternative for Windows?

ScreenArt Pro. It gives a Windows PC the auto-zoom, cursor-smoothed product demo Screen Studio is known for, and goes further with a full screenshot editor in the same app, Smart Redact that finds and covers secrets automatically in video and stills, subtitles generated on your PC, and an MCP server that lets Claude, Codex or any AI agent record a scripted walkthrough. It is €1.99 a month or €24.99 once.

How much does Screen Studio cost compared with ScreenArt Pro?

Screen Studio is $9 a month billed yearly ($108 a year) or $29 month to month, and the one-time licence is no longer sold. ScreenArt Pro is €1.99 a month or €24.99 once with two years of updates. Over two years that is $216 for Screen Studio against €24.99 for ScreenArt Pro.

Does ScreenArt Pro hide sensitive data in recordings automatically?

Yes. Smart Redact runs on-device text recognition over the recording, finds emails, API keys, tokens, card numbers, phone numbers and IP addresses, and covers each one in the surrounding colour for every frame it is visible, in the preview and in the export. Screen Studio offers manual sensitive-data masks that you place and time yourself.

Can an AI agent record a demo video with ScreenArt Pro?

Yes. ScreenArt Pro is an MCP server. An agent can send a script of clicks, typing and key presses; ScreenArt Pro moves the real pointer on the live app, finds each target by its visible label, zooms to it, sketches a circle or arrow where the pointer lands, adds captions, and returns a finished MP4, GIF or WebM. You approve each session and Esc stops it. Screen Studio has no agent interface.

Does ScreenArt Pro record the webcam and iPhone like Screen Studio?

ScreenArt Pro records the camera as a plain shaped overlay with microphone and system audio. It does not record an iPhone screen and does not remove the webcam background. If those are essential, Screen Studio on a Mac is the better fit today.

ScreenArt Pro is $1.99€1.99£1.69 a month or $24.99€24.99£21.99 once, for Windows 10 and 11, with a 14-day refund on either plan. If a figure about Screen Studio above is out of date, write to us and it will be corrected.
